The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has appealed to political leaders and citizens to embrace the results of the 2024 general elections with grace, highlighting the importance of unity and national progress.

His comments follow the National Democratic Congress (NDC), under the leadership of former President John Dramani Mahama, achieving a decisive victory. Mahama reclaimed the presidency while the party secured a significant parliamentary majority. The New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, experienced a major defeat, losing both the presidency and numerous parliamentary seats.

In his Christmas and New Year address to Ghanaians, Speaker Bagbin reflected on the nation’s governance, economic, and democratic challenges. He expressed confidence that these experiences would serve as lessons for better leadership and performance in the coming year.

Bagbin urged citizens to focus on national unity as a cornerstone for development, stressing that collaboration and understanding are critical for progress after the elections.

“I am happy that God has intervened in what was a very difficult election for this country. None of us expected this outcome from the 2024 general elections. But as God would have it, this is the result. My call to everyone is to accept the results with humility… to recognize that this is how the Almighty God has ordained it and to reflect,” he stated.

He continued, “…To look deeply into our souls and assess what went wrong and what went right, both individually and collectively as a nation, and to unite to build our country. Without a unified nation, we are fragmented, living in silos, in tribes, divided, which breeds hatred and opens the door for the devil to play its role.

“I believe it is crucial for us to come together. It is vital to remain open to each other, engage in dialogue, and use peaceful methods and the rule of law to address our differences,” Bagbin added.
