As the 2024 general elections approach, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has called on Members of Parliament to carefully manage their time, balancing their legislative responsibilities with their campaign efforts.

Speaking at the 5th meeting of the Fourth Session on Tuesday, October 15, Bagbin highlighted the importance of ensuring that MPs do not let their focus on campaigning distract them from their primary duty of addressing the country’s legislative needs, especially with several pressing national issues on the agenda.

Bagbin acknowledged the challenges MPs face during the election season, noting the significant effort required to either secure or retain their seats. He, however, stressed that the legislative work before Parliament is just as crucial in the lead-up to the elections.

“The legislative agenda ahead is weighty, and we must approach it with the seriousness it demands. The Environmental Protection Bill, Parliamentary Service Bill, and Parliamentary Transition Bill—these and other time-sensitive bills must be scheduled for debate and decisions made as soon as possible,” Bagbin emphasized.

He added, “It is understandable that the demands of campaigning will pull your time and energy. However, it is critical that we balance these demands with our legislative responsibilities.”

Bagbin’s remarks underscored the need for MPs to remain committed to their duties in Parliament while preparing for the upcoming elections.
