Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has taken a swipe at National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, labeling his previous administration as an ‘akonfem’ era.
Speaking to party supporters at the Ofie Mega Walk in Akropong on Saturday, August 3, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that Ghana is progressing into a digital age, not an ‘akonfem’ era.
Dr. Bawumia outlined his vision for transforming the country, highlighting plans to digitalize customs operations to reduce corruption and streamline passport applications. He stressed that digital technology would simplify the passport application process, making it more efficient for Ghanaians.
In his critique of Mahama, Dr. Bawumia stated, “Ghana is going into the digitalisation age, not the ‘akonfem’ age. Vote for me so that we can also learn from the Europeans to develop our nation.”
He further claimed that Mahama, if elected, would only serve a single term and thus would lack accountability to the electorate. In contrast, Bawumia emphasized his commitment to two terms, ensuring accountability and continuity.
Dr. Bawumia urged supporters to vote for him, asserting that Ghana needs a leader with fresh ideas, integrity, and best practices for national development. He explained, “From the customs office, we’ll introduce the flat rate of duty and digit-ability to prevent corruption at the port for the development of the country. We are bringing more initiatives on board as we launch our manifesto in a few weeks to come. Because of digitalization, passport application is going to be a thing of the past.
“If you have your card, you don’t have to apply and fill out a form for a passport. We have all your details, so you’ll just pay the fee, and then we print your passport for you. This initiative will help the country to move into digitalisation.”
He concluded by reinforcing his vision, stating, “I want to be president for eight years, meaning I’ll come back to make accountability after my first term. He [Mahama] won’t come back to make accountability. Ghana needs a new president with new ideas and integrity.”
