Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ejisu constituency in the Ashanti Region, Dr. John Kumah, who passed away on March 7, 2024, at the age of 45.
In his tribute, the NPP presidential candidate described the late MP as “a friend and strong supporter.” Dr. Bawumia stated, “John’s contributions to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were invaluable. He was not only a driving force but also a fervent advocate for advancing the NPP agenda.” These remarks were made during the late MP’s burial and funeral service on Saturday, May 18.
Dr. Bawumia expressed his personal sense of loss, saying, “His sudden death in March has been a personal blow. Long before I decided to run for president, John Kumah was among the few party leaders and legislators to have publicly urged me to run and pledged his unending support. Through his public pledge, John supported me strongly, campaigning with me everywhere in the country.”
A large gathering of mourners assembled in Ejisu to bid farewell to the late lawmaker. Colleagues from the Finance Ministry remembered Dr. Kumah as an exemplary deputy minister and a caring father of six, beloved by his colleagues.
Abena Osei-Asare, Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, highlighted his significant contributions: “At our first meeting with the IMF mission in Accra, Dr. John Kumah proved to be an indispensable member of the Ghana team. He provided a lot of technical support and chaired key meetings. His efforts contributed to the Ministry achieving a staff-level agreement in record time.”
Dr. John Kumah passed away on Thursday, March 7, after a brief illness. His sudden death prompted a by-election in the Ejisu Constituency, supervised by the Electoral Commission. Lawyer Kwabena Boateng, also of the New Patriotic Party, has since been sworn in as his successor after winning the fiercely contested election.
