Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has made a strong case for the NPP to remain in power, arguing that the party’s continued governance would significantly benefit Ghana.
During a campaign stop at Kaneshie market in Okaikoi South, Dr. Bawumia outlined a series of policies that the NPP intends to implement to improve the lives of Ghanaians and bolster business growth. He highlighted plans to introduce a flat tax policy in cedis for all goods and a tax amnesty to simplify interactions with the Ghana Revenue Authority.
Dr. Bawumia also stressed the NPP’s commitment to small businesses and women traders, announcing plans to establish a specialized SME bank and a women’s trade empowerment fund.
He added that the party would remove import duties on mobile phones, extend the validity of driving licenses to 10 years, and abolish the controversial e-levy. Additionally, Dr. Bawumia promised to equip the youth with essential digital skills.
In making his case for the presidency, Dr. Bawumia contrasted himself with his opponent, former President John Dramani Mahama. He pointed out that Mahama, if elected, would serve only a four-year term, which might limit his accountability to the electorate. In contrast, Dr. Bawumia assured voters that he would be accountable for a longer period if given the mandate.
“We are introducing a new directive to reform the import regime at the port, including a flat tax policy in cedis, applicable to all goods, making Ghana’s import duty comparable to or lower than Togo’s,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “We are also launching a women’s bank, an SME bank dedicated to supporting women traders with financial assistance for their businesses. Additionally, we are introducing a tax amnesty to avoid confusion with the Ghana Revenue Authority and eliminating import duty on mobile phones.”
He continued, “Furthermore, we will extend the validity of driving licences to 10 years, abolish the e-levy, and provide digital skills training for the youth. If you vote for former President John Dramani Mahama, he will only be accountable for four years. However, if you vote for me, I will have the opportunity to be accountable to you for a longer period.”
