Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to eliminate the controversial E-Levy and betting tax if elected President in the 2024 general elections.
In his address during the party’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, August 18, Dr. Bawumia promised that his administration would introduce extensive tax reforms to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians. These reforms would include a tax amnesty for overdue payments and waivers for interest and penalties on unfiled taxes.
“We will accelerate Ghana’s growth into a world-class digital economy and make Ghana the digital hub of Africa,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “We will achieve this through policies, competitive incentives, and strategic investments. We will invest in developing local talent and supporting tech start-ups.”
He elaborated on the planned reforms, saying, “We will abolish the E-Levy and implement wide-ranging tax reforms. This includes offering a one-time tax amnesty for all Ghanaians and corporate entities, waiving interest and penalties on previous tax failures, and allowing everyone to start their tax journey afresh.”
Dr. Bawumia also outlined additional reforms, such as “wiping the slate clean” for all taxpayers by merging all levies into a single line-item levy as part of the Value Added Tax regime, reducing Withholding Tax (WHT) for small-scale gold exports to 1% to discourage smuggling, and abolishing the Betting Tax.
