Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to protect and enhance the Free Senior High School (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes if elected.
At the NPP’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the pivotal role these educational initiatives play in national development and in shaping the future of Ghana’s youth. He emphasized his commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian child has access to quality education, regardless of their financial background.
“These Free SHS and TVET programmes are cornerstones of our educational sector,” Dr. Bawumia said. “My administration will continue to invest in and enhance these initiatives to provide better opportunities for our young people.”
He outlined several measures to strengthen these programmes, including increased funding, improved infrastructure, and updated curricula to align with modern job market demands. Additionally, he announced plans to expand access to TVET programmes, allowing more students to benefit from vocational training and acquire essential skills for various industries.
“We will protect and enhance Free SHS and TVET, which are truly transforming lives and improving outcomes for millions,” he added. “Since the inception of Free SHS/TVET, enrolment has increased by 83%. We are laying the foundation for a well-educated, prosperous society. The programme has achieved gender parity, with more girls receiving secondary education, which will positively impact society. We will also recruit more teachers at all levels and improve their conditions of service.”
