The campaign team for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has defended claims that contracts worth over GHC200 million were awarded to Bawumia’s brother. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticized Dr. Bawumia for allegedly benefiting from the very single-source procurement practices he has publicly criticized. The NDC has accused the current administration of state capture and corruption.

In its latest Moment of Truth series, the NDC alleged that the NPP flagbearer has become a beneficiary of these procurement practices despite his criticisms. Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi urged voters to support John Mahama for a change that would ensure accountability and address corruption. “This is a goal to cover up the corrupt deeds of these nation-wrecking NPP ‘agyapadie’ and shield wrongdoers including Bawumia himself and his corrupt Akufo-Addo from accountability. Bawumia cannot simply fight corruption. A vote for his Excellency John Mahama is a vote for change. A change that will ensure genuine accountability and justice. He has assured to confront the canker of corruption head-on,” Gyamfi stated.

In response, Anthony Abayifaa Karbo from the NPP flagbearer’s campaign team confirmed that Dr. Bawumia’s brother has indeed benefited from sole-sourced contracts, noting that such contracts are not inherently illegal or corrupt. He highlighted that sole-sourced contracts have been used by all parties in government, including the NDC. “It’s not a new issue that is being brought up today. Sole-source contracts are not illegal or corrupt by nature. If it is because his brother is the Vice President, then we can also look back at John Mahama and his brother, who have also been given sole-sourced contracts. Except that some corruption is established and proved, sole-sourced contracts in their nature cannot be considered corrupt. I have supervised many sole-sourced contracts under the ministry, and most were done under a certificate of urgency,” Karbo explained.
