Tricycles that would be impounded for flouting the ban on their activities within the Kumasi Central Business District (CBD) would be asked to pay a GHC500 fine.
This was contained in a document issued by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), after its 2nd Ordinary Meeting on 28 July.
The KMA also resolved that taxis and trotros that will be arrested for illegal loading at unauthorized locations will also be expected to pay a fine of GH¢500 with sprinters and buses also expected to pay GH¢800 and GH¢1000 respectively.
Cargo vehicles that will flout the same directive will also pay a minimum of GH¢600 and a maximum of GH¢1500.
The KMA in its quest to re-organize the Central Business District (CBD) imposed a ban on the movement of tricycles at the trading hub. The move has been opposed by these tricycle riders with 12 of them facing a court and currently on a GHC30,000 bail.
But city authorities have justified this move and are seeking the intervention of parliament to regulate their activities.
“It is our wish that parliament legislate so that probably they would be properly regulated or totally banned from operating in commercial areas”, said Randy Wilson, Head of the Transport Department at the KMA.
