The Chief Imam of the Bole Traditional Area, Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, has imposed a ban on lavish Islamic weddings within his jurisdiction, effective Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

This decision follows consultations with Islamic clerics and seeks to address the growing concern over excessive wedding expenses, which have made it difficult for many young people to marry. In an official statement from his office, Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu emphasized that the rising costs of extravagant ceremonies are discouraging marriage among the youth.

The ban specifically prohibits practices such as elaborate wedding receptions, multiple outfit changes by couples, male beauticians styling the opposite sex, and large-scale dance celebrations known as “jams.” “This decision aims to curb deviant practices which set high wedding costs, therefore making it difficult for many youths to get married,” the statement noted.

The Chief Imam urged community members and relevant authorities to support the enforcement of the new directive. Copies of the statement were distributed to key institutions, including the Bolewura (Paramount Chief of Bole), the municipal police commander, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and local media outlets such as Nkilgi FM and Yagbon FM.
