When the former Finance Minister, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, recently made an incursion into the media space by shadow-boxing former President John Mahama, he did not only raise eyebrows, but also kicked up an air of suspicion about him.
How this bullied banker, whose life’s work, uniBank was deliberately picked apart by the Akufo-Addo government right before his own eyes, suddenly found his voice was jolting to many observers.
Even more surprising was the fact that the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana was directing his sucker punches at none other than the immediate past leader of his party, the NDC.
Well, the dust has since been settling and the revelation is that the Duffuor shadow lumping at John Mahama is only dancing from the long leash of puppet masters deep within the Akufo-Addo Jubilee House.
It is confirmed that Dr. Duffuor is indeed angling to contest former President John Mahama for the 2024 presidential ticket of the NDC but the aim is not to win – it is to try and cause disaffection within the NDC.
First, the plot was hatched with some willing party gurus as the broods tucks sneaking into some party gatherings with anti-Mahama agenda; their move was discovered and they were stopped in the Eastern region.
According to sources, Duffuor has sold out on his party to the Akufo-Addo government in a marriage of convenience that will restore him his collapsed banks and spare him prosecution by the government.
Per the arrangement, he will contest Mr. Mahama who is now like the face of the NDC Presidential ticket and cause as much commotion as possible for the former President in the lead up to the NDC’s presidential primary.
Duffuor knows he has no chance at all to win against Mahama but his masters are only looking to use him to cause as much confusion as possible. In exchange, the Akufo-Addo government will drop any charges it has against the former Finance Minister and return his collapsed bank, uniBank, to him.
Deep throat sources tell of how the deal was cooked at meetings held between Duffuor and power brokers from the Akufo-Addo government. And the attendees from the government side included the usual suspects – Gabby Asare Otchere Darko, the President’s cousin and Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
Indeed, even before the shadow boxing from Duffuor, Otchere-Darko had foretold that Dr. Duffuor was definitely going to contest John Mahama for the 2024 presidential ticket of the NDC.
Sources have said that the deal includes sponsorship packages for the campaign of Duffuor from the Akufo-Addo government when the race begins.
And so, when Dr. Duffuor recently countered former President Mahama’s declaration that the 2024 elections will be a “do or die” for the NDC and that the party will, having learnt a bitter lesson in 2020, ensure that it wins clearly at the polling stations, he was carrying out the desires of the Akufo-Addo government.
Mr. Mahama’s warning on Akina FM had been a rallying call that resonated with the support base of the NDC very well and so Dr. Duffuor’s sermonization that violence is not good for the country was a discord. However, it got him the media attention.
Meanwhile, other moving parts of the plan are being rolled out nicely; Dr. Duffuor has suddenly been attending forums on the economy and speaking up before television cameras while posters advertising him as the coming savior of the NDC in 2024 have also hit the media space.
It has also been emerging that Dr. Kwabena Duffuor is not the only Fifth Columnist recruit of the Akufo-Addo government from within the NDC – other big boys including lawyer, Goosie Tanoh and Mr. Kyeretwie Opoku are in the agenda against John Mahama.
