In a lopsided CAF Champions League Group D encounter at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium, Medeama found themselves thoroughly outplayed by Yanga, suffering a 3-0 defeat on a Wednesday afternoon that showcased the Tanzanian side’s dominance.
Throughout the first half, Medeama struggled to contain Yanga’s swift attackers, with Ivorian forward Peodoh Pacome Zouzoua, who had previously scored against Medeama in Kumasi, breaking the deadlock in the 33rd minute. Despite some brilliant saves from goalkeeper Felix Kyei, Yanga maintained a 62 percent ball possession compared to Medeama’s 38 percent in the first half, emphasizing their control over the game.
As the halftime whistle approached, Medeama, resilient but a goal down, regrouped in the dressing room. The Ghanaian champions were granted a penalty opportunity in the 52nd minute after striker Jonathan Sowah was fouled in the box. However, Sowah’s attempt was thwarted as the Yanga goalkeeper made a decisive save, preserving the Tanzanian side’s lead.
Felix Kyei continued to showcase his goalkeeping prowess in the 58th minute, making a crucial one-handed save to deny Yanga their second goal. Nevertheless, the relentless Yanga attack proved fruitful in the 61st minute when Zambian forward Kennedy Musonda found the net, doubling their lead.
Medeama’s attempts to play from the back backfired in the 66th minute, allowing Yanga’s Tanzanian midfielder Mudathir Yahya to capitalize and score the third goal. The deficit became insurmountable for Medeama.
In a final blow to Medeama’s hopes, Jonathan Sowah received his marching orders in the 90th minute, leaving the Ghanaian side with ten men. Yanga’s comprehensive 3-0 victory underscored their superiority in this CAF Champions League clash, while Medeama faced a challenging day on the field.
