The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has declared an indefinite strike starting Thursday, January 2, 2025.
This decision was reached after an Emergency National Council meeting held on Monday, December 30, 2024. CETAG announced the move in a statement issued on December 31, citing the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) failure to address concerns raised in earlier strike notices dated September 26 and December 23, 2024.
According to CETAG, the government has repeatedly violated agreements and roadmaps related to the unresolved compulsory arbitration award issued by the NLC on May 2, 2023. The association emphasized that its members are left with no choice but to take this action.
“The National Council of CETAG wishes to state unequivocally that members of the union shall not under any circumstance return to the colleges to undertake any official duties, including teaching, and supervision of project work and macro-teaching, until the last pesewa is paid into our accounts,” the statement read.
The association further clarified that its strike is lawful, citing Section 159 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) to justify their stance.
