CHAN 2022: Algeria 1 – 0 Ivory Coast – Les Fennecs pip Elephants with late penalty

Les Fennecs of Algeria beat the Elephants of Côté d’Ivoire in their quarter-final clash at the 2022 CAF Africa Nations Championship in Algeria.

Alexis Goundouz, Algeria’s goalkeeper was red carded after 20 minutes as he handled the ball outside the box.

Few minutes later, Ivory Coast were also reduced to 10 men when Kouassi Atohuola Yao was shown the exit on the 34th minute mark of the match.

The opening 45 minutes of the match ended in an entertaining goalless draw.

Ivory Coast grew into the game after the break and started creating few openings with long balls over the top to catch the Algerians on the break.

Both teams created good opportunities but failed to utilize all the good chances that came their way.

Into the additional time period of the match, Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed an incident and subsequently award Algeria a spot kick.

Aymen Mahious stepped up and converted the spot kick to win the game to send the host nation through to the semi-final sending the home fans into ecstacy.

Algeria will take on the winner between the Black Galaxies team from Ghana and Niger who plays tomorrow.
