Borussia Mönchengladbach, a top-tier German football club, has announced the acquisition of Charles Herrmann, the son of former Ghanaian player and coach Charles Kwabla (CK) Akonnor.
Herrmann, who has spent the last four years honing his skills at Borussia Dortmund, emerged as a standout player in their youth squad. His notable performances earned him a spot on Germany’s U17 national team, with which he won the U17 European Championship and the U17 FIFA World Cup in 2023.
Confirming the transfer, Borussia Mönchengladbach stated, “The Foals have signed 18-year-old offensive player Charles Herrmann from Borussia Dortmund.”
Roland Virkus, the sporting director of the club, praised Herrmann’s talent and potential. “We are delighted that Charles Herrmann has decided to move to us. He is a young, talented player who has the potential for higher tasks. But first, he has to settle in here. We will give him the opportunities and time to develop,” Virkus stated.
Mirko Sandmöller, the club’s director of youth, expressed his satisfaction with Herrmann’s decision to join Mönchengladbach, despite previous attempts and significant interest from other clubs. “We wanted to convince Charles to come to us four years ago. We are delighted that he has now decided to join Borussia Mönchengladbach a few years later – even though there were several national and international interested parties.”
Sandmöller also highlighted Herrmann’s skills and achievements, saying, “He won the World and European Championship with the German U17 national team and recently showed, particularly at the U17 World Cup, what qualities he can bring to the pitch. He has a good left foot, is strong at dribbling, and his dynamism always creates a goal threat.”
Although Herrmann has represented Germany at the youth level, he remains eligible to play for Ghana if he chooses to switch his national allegiance in the future.
