Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has ordered the immediate closure of all courts in the Upper East Region due to the intensifying Bawku conflict. This decision follows concerns raised by court staff and judges over their safety amidst the ongoing violence. The closure will remain in effect until further notice.

In a statement released by the Judicial Service Secretary, Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng JA, on Tuesday, October 29, court registrars were instructed to secure all court assets, and staff were advised to prioritize their personal safety.

The renewed conflict in Bawku has led to at least 16 fatalities and numerous injuries, prompting the government to enforce a curfew from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM. To enhance security, the Ghana Police Service has increased its presence along the Bolga-Tamale highway following a recent shooting incident.

The resurgence of violence has been attributed to the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief, which has reignited a longstanding chieftaincy dispute.

The affected courts include:

1. High Court, Bolgatanga

2. Circuit Court, Bolgatanga

3. District Court, Bolgatanga

4. District Court, Zuarungu

5. District Court, Zebila

6. District Court, Garu

7. District Court, Bongo
