The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has urged residents of Bawku to remain calm and united, cautioning against politicizing the rising conflict in the area.

In a media briefing on Tuesday, October 29, the minister stressed the government’s commitment to restoring peace in Bawku, a region troubled by ongoing violence largely due to unresolved chieftaincy and ethnic tensions.

This call for peace follows an alarming incident on Sunday, October 27, when gunmen attacked travelers along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, a community close to Walewale. Tragically, eight travelers were killed after being questioned about their identities, and two vehicles were set ablaze, deepening security concerns and amplifying the need for urgent government intervention.

Addressing these developments, Asamoah Boateng reassured the community that the government, in collaboration with various agencies, is committed to working impartially with all parties involved. He discouraged the spread of conspiracy theories and political finger-pointing, emphasizing that the government is focused on addressing both security and chieftaincy issues in Bawku.

“I will implore all sides to stop the conspiracy theories going around and the blame games and keep calm and allow the government to deal with the security and chieftaincy issues therefore. No one should play politics with this sensitive matter, and I will continue to engage my colleagues in the political arena from all sides to work with the government to resolve the current problems and work towards lasting peace in the area,” he said.

The minister also directed a strong appeal to traditional leaders, urging them to avoid actions that could worsen the situation. “I strongly call on the traditional leaders from both sides to refrain from any act that will escalate the situation,” he stated, highlighting the importance of leadership in fostering stability.

As the government intensifies efforts to restore peace, Asamoah Boateng’s message underscores the need for unity and caution, urging all parties involved to work collectively toward a peaceful resolution in Bawku.
