A cholera outbreak in Kasoa has left five people dead and 30 others hospitalized at the Kasoa Polyclinic and Mother and Child Hospital, confirmed local officials. Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Awutu Senya East, Anita Love Obo Amissah, reported that three victims succumbed to the illness on Thursday, October 31, with two more deaths following on Friday afternoon, bringing the total fatalities to five.
Expressing deep concern, the MCE urged Kasoa residents to be extra vigilant, prioritize cleanliness, and maintain a healthy diet to curb the disease’s spread. Amissah also noted that some cholera cases have been referred from surrounding areas, including Awutu Senya West and Gomoa East, indicating a need for collaborative efforts to manage the outbreak effectively.
“The Mother and Child Hospital and the Kasoa Polyclinic have done their best to manage the situation,” Amissah stated. “What I want to ask from the people of Kasoa is to take good care of themselves by eating healthy food. I understand the hospital has called back staff who were on leave to help deal with the issue. There have been referrals from Awutu Senya West and Gomoa East, taking the total number of deaths to five. Thirty more people are still on admission as we speak.”
Amissah praised healthcare providers for their prompt response to the crisis and advised residents to stay alert.
Awutu Senya East Municipal Environmental Officer, Godson Lodo, emphasized essential hygiene practices for residents, particularly market traders, to prevent further spread. “I want to get the market women to keep their environment clean, and the same goes for food sellers to ensure that the food they sell is hot all the time,” Lodo advised. “We must also keep our environment clean as residents to avoid the spread.”
