The Christian Council of Ghana has joined the growing chorus calling for a decisive and comprehensive ban on illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.” This appeal comes as the negative impacts of illegal mining on the environment, local communities, and the country’s future have reached critical levels, prompting a demand for immediate and substantial action.

Reverend Cyril Fayose, General Secretary of the Christian Council, emphasized the severe threat posed by galamsey to Ghana’s natural resources, including water bodies, farmlands, and ecosystems. He described the situation as an urgent crisis that requires prompt and effective intervention.

Reverend Fayose argued that a mere condemnation or reactive measures would not suffice. He stressed the need for a well-thought-out, comprehensive strategy to safeguard Ghana’s future. “I think there should be a total ban, or at least a temporary moratorium on galamsey so that we can take the time to devise a plan moving forward,” he said.

He outlined two potential approaches: a complete ban on small-scale mining, similar to the prohibition of mining in water bodies, or, if a total ban is not feasible, ensuring that small-scale mining operations are community-owned.
