Ghana’s opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has stopped its national chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo from honouring an invitation from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Ofosu-Ampofo have been fingered in the various kidnappings and fire outbreaks at some markets in Ghana, the police said.

The CID is therefore inviting Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo to its headquarters Thursday, May 9, 2019 to assist with investigations, a letter from the investigative outfit to the NDC stalwart said.

In the said letter dated May 7, 2019, the CID said suspects have mentioned Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo’s name as one of the masterminds.

“The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has commenced investigations into cases of kidnapping and fire outbreaks in various parts of the country. Intelligence gathered indicates that some of these kidnappings and fire outbreaks are being orchestrated by various unidentified groups, persons and individuals.

“Some of the persons picked up for interrogation and investigation have mentioned your name as part of a grand scheme designed to cause fear and panic in the country,” the letter signed by the Director-General of the CID Mrs Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah said.

The NDC has, however, called the bluff of the security agency.

“We can’t be intimidated and we are sending a clear notice to them that we are treating this letter with the contempt it deserves,” NDC deputy General Secretary, Peter Boamah Otokunor told Accra-based Starr FM.

“We are going to impress on our national chairman not to honour the invitatioin. In fact, when he attempts we are going to stop him… it’s baseless and unconstitutional and we see it as an encroachment on his fundamental human rights,” he added.
