A violent encounter between military officers and civilians in Nyinahin, a town in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region, has resulted in one death and four injuries.
The incident happened on the morning of Thursday, April 24, 2025, around 10:30 a.m., during the funeral of a young man in the community.
Three of the injured individuals are currently being treated at the Nyinahin Government Hospital, while another has been referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for advanced medical care.
Speaking to Citi News, Assembly Member for the Nyinahin Bubuom Electoral Area, Clinton Darko, explained that the confrontation began when military officers traveling through the area saw some young men wearing military attire.
“The officers reportedly stopped and asked the young men to remove the uniforms,” Darko said. “That led to a heated exchange and ultimately a scuffle.”
The situation escalated quickly. Stones were thrown, and gunshots were fired, resulting in the death of 37-year-old Akwasi Lala, widely known in the area as Kushibi. Four others were injured during the unrest.
Darko further noted that the military officers fled the scene after the shooting. Police have since arrived in Nyinahin to maintain peace and begin a full investigation into the incident.
