The leadership of the Cocoa Carriers Association has directed its members stationed at the Tema, Takoradi, and Kumasi depots of the Cocoa Marketing Company Limited to begin an indefinite sit-down strike from Monday, October 7, 2024. This action stems from ongoing grievances about their working conditions.
In 2022, the association had organized a similar strike, pushing for wage hikes and better working conditions. That previous industrial action resulted in thousands of cocoa bean bags being left unattended in various Cocoa Marketing Company Limited warehouses.
Speaking to Citi News on Sunday, the National Chairman of the Cocoa Carriers Association, Raymond Atanga Abobiga, instructed all members to fully engage in the strike.
“We are going to report at work but will be at the gate of the various warehouses and then we are not going to work until they attend to our needs and our demands,” he explained.
Abobiga emphasized that their protest is not personal, adding, “I want the management of COCBOD and our directors to know that we are not against an individual and that we are fighting a just cause.”
