The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has postponed a proposed 15% increase in transport fares, which was scheduled to take effect on Monday, July 22, 2024.
The planned fare hike was intended to address rising costs of fuel and essential transport components such as spare parts. However, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) advised commuters to ignore the initial announcement.
David Agboado, Public Relations Officer for the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, explained in an interview with Citi Business News that the timing of the fare increase would further burden the public, leading to the decision to suspend the hike.
“We, the transport operators, have reviewed the situation and decided that despite the increases in fuel, spare parts, and other costs, now is not the right time for a fare increase,” Agboado said. “We have come to a consensus that we will not proceed with the increase.”
He urged commercial drivers to continue charging the existing fares until a more suitable time for a price adjustment. “I advise my fellow drivers to be patient. We have made this decision in their best interest. They should remain patient, and the appropriate time for an increase will come,” Agboado added.
