The Asokore Mampong District Court has granted ¢200,000 each to four accused persons standing trial in connection with the violence that broke out at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
The court, as part of the bail conditions, ordered the accused persons to present three sureties with one to be justified by a public officer.
The four, who are facing the court for rioting and causing unlawful damage were remanded into police custody during the last adjourned date. They were arrested by the police, as the search for 62 persons linked to the August 18 incident continues.
During proceedings on Thursday (October 13), the court presided over by Samuel Buabeng Quansah shot down the prosecution’s attempt to keep the suspects in custody.
He consequently adjourned proceedings to October 27.
What happened on August 18?
A clash between residents of the University (Katanga) and Unity (Conti) Halls got many injured and properties destroyed.
The Ashanti Regional Security Council has since beefed up security on campus as the search continues to hunt down the suspects.
The University management also announced a raft of measures to curtail such violence on campus, including the suspension of all Hall and SRC Week activities.
Management has also scrapped the Junior Common Room system, a decision many described as “draconian”.
