Seven persons have died after testing positive for Covid-19 in the Ashanti Region, the Ghana Health Service has disclosed.

Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang, said the region’s case count currently stands at 888 as of Wednesday, May 20, 2020.

He also revealed that 25 out of 43 Districts and Municipal Assemblies have recorded the virus and have been identified as hotspots.

He also added that all patients including some 30 health workers are responding to treatment as recovery rate increases steadily, especially at Obuasi which has the highest count of 587 cases.

“We have a total of 30 health workers having Covid-19 in the region and all of them are doing very well,” said Dr Tenkorang, who added that: “We have new infections however the good news is that the new infections are going down especially in Obuasi.”

Mass voluntary testing at Obuasi

Earlier last week health officials were deployed to Obuasi following a surge of the virus.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, May 19, health officials said a mass voluntary testing and enhance contact tracing would be initiated to help contain the virus in the mining town.

Health officials also said the exercise is targeted at identified groups including market women, drivers and food vendors in highly populated communities.

“We are going to do a mass voluntary testing and an enhanced contact tracing in high risk areas in Obuasi,” Head of surveillance at the Ghana Health Service, Dr Frank Bekoe told the media, adding that a 100-bed isolation center would be used to accommodate patients.
