Management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi has directed doctors and nurses at the facility’s ICU to self-isolate after they were exposed to Covid-19.
A memo to staff and seen by Dailymailgh.com stated that the unit will not run in full capacity in the next 14 days after the medics were found to have had a “high-risk exposure” to the case.
“Most of our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Doctors and Nurses got exposed to Polytrauma patient on admission in the ICU who tested positive for COVID-19. The risk assess puts most of them at high-risk exposure and have self-quarantined for 14 days,” the memo said.
The memo further said that an urgent management meeting had been held and the duty has been modified such that:
1. The remaining Doctors will do cover for emergencies and obstetric cases only at NAKSA Theatre
2. The ICU will not run at full capacity for 14 days.
This comes at a time many health workers in the country have tested positive for Covid-19 in an already fragile health system.
A Medical Superintendent at the Kwadaso SDA Hospital in Kumasi was found dead over the weekend, after testing positive for the virus.
A joint police and health service investigations have already launched into the matter. A massive contact tracing exercise is also underway.
The country’s Minister for Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu who also tested positive for Covid-19 is said to be recovering at home.
