On August 11, disunity among the Ashanti Regional Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) became evident when several disgruntled members chose to boycott the party’s regional campaign team inauguration at Rattray Park in Kumasi. Despite having been assigned important roles in the campaign, executives such as Francis Adomako (Regional Organizer), Raphael Patrick Sarfo (Regional Youth Organizer), Patrick Acheampong (First Vice Chairman), and the Second Vice Chairwoman did not attend the event.
The inauguration was attended by key figures, including Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Vice Presidential candidate), Akosua Frema Opare (Chief of Staff), Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu (Chairman of NPP Manifesto Committee), and Dr. Osei Afriyie Akoto (former Minister of Agriculture).
The absent executives had expressed dissatisfaction with Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, accusing him of making decisions without proper consultation. Despite efforts by National Executives to address these concerns, the issues remain unresolved.
During the ceremony, Chairman Wontumi urged the newly appointed committees to carry out their duties effectively to meet the party’s goals. However, some party members voiced concerns about the impact of the internal divisions on the party’s election prospects. Delegates from constituencies such as Manhyia South, North, Bantama, and Suame noted, “In 2008, we had a strong economy and failed to secure a win. Now, with a struggling economy and intense pressure from the NDC, facing elections with a divided party seems detrimental.”
Others suggested that the General Secretary should address the internal conflicts to ensure a unified approach for the upcoming elections.
