Doctors at the Oncology Department of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have intensified their protest over the prolonged malfunction of the Linear Accelerator System used for radiotherapy services.

At least six out of 10 doctors abandoned consultation rooms on Monday (24 June), citing delays in repairing the crucial equipment, which has been non-operational since breaking down in October 2023.

Although the machine has been repaired, it remains non-functional as management awaits the arrival of a water phantom needed to calibrate the system. This delay in getting the essential equipment up and running has frustrated doctors at the Oncology Department.

But Dr. Opare Larbi, the Deputy Medical Director at KATH, described the doctors’ strike as unfair.

“Why would you want the other patients who do not use radiotherapy to suffer because the radiotherapy machine is not working? I believe that if someone is on chemotherapy or any treatment that involves injecting medication to treat their cancer and the radiotherapy machine is not working, you decide to withdraw your services totally for those who are not on radiotherapy to suffer; it is not fair,” he said in a media interview.

“We have tried to reason out with them [management] a lot on this issue.”

Meanwhile, Asaase News gathers that the office of the Health Minister’s attention has been drawn to the development and is expected to meet the management of KATH over the development.
