Gabby Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and cousin to the President, recently shared his thoughts on what qualities people should consider when choosing a life partner.
His comments were prompted by an alleged post attributed to Pastor Elvis Agyemang, known for the popular Alpha Hour midnight prayer session. The post advised men to be cautious about marrying women who see themselves as superior to their husbands.
Encouraging a thoughtful approach, Otchere-Darko stressed the importance of recognizing and valuing the unique attributes each partner brings to the relationship. He emphasized that couples come together because they cherish and appreciate qualities in each other that make them better as a team.
“A man and a woman become a couple because there are things about each other that the other values/cherishes/appreciates and by teaming up, it makes the partner/spouse better,” he said.
He advised people to take their time, reflect, and evaluate the qualities they admire in prospective life partners, whether in their personal or professional lives. Otchere-Darko emphasized the importance of acknowledging and appreciating the strengths of one’s partner.
“It is what partnership is all about; value addition in more ways than we may care to admit. Some call it love. Others simply see it as a way of life if not the way of life,” he noted.
His perspective underscores the importance of a holistic approach to selecting a life partner, focusing on mutual respect, appreciation, and the potential for shared growth within the relationship. He advocates for a deeper understanding of partnership and companionship, especially in a society where traditional gender roles often influence marital expectations.
