The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, says emerging democracies will only grow from strength to strength if women are supported to participate in political leadership.
According to the Asante Monarch, women must not be sidelined in running the affairs of the state, but rather be challenged to be agents of change.
Otumfuo made this call when flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Bridget Dzogbenuku, paid a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Wednesday, November 25.
The visit was to formally announce her presence in the Ashanti Region as she campaigns for votes ahead of the December 7 polls.
Otumfuo in his address praised Madam Dzogbenuku for taking such a bold step and urged young women to emulate same.
He urged the leadership of the PPP to work hard to deliver on its campaign promises should the party win the December 2020 elections.
On her part, the flagbearer said the party was poised to deliver on all promises since it is founded on truth and integrity.
“We come in peace and truth. It’s time for the people of Ghana to accept that females can also work hard to develop the nation”, Madam Bridget Dzogbenuku said.
Madam Dzogbenuku is the first woman to lead the PPP founded by businessman and politician Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom.
She served as running mate to Dr Nduom in the 2016 general elections.
