A routine operation by police in the Eastern Region has led to the arrest of 17 people who were possessing unregistered firearms at Donkorkrom.
The joint operation was carried out by the police at Donkorkrom and the newly formed Anti-Armed Robbery Unit deployed to the Eastern Region.
Spokesperson for the Eastern Region Police Command DSP Ebenezer Tetteh confirmed the incident to reporters.
“In all 17 persons were arrested with 17 machetes, one foreign pistol, three locally manufactured pistols, four single-barreled shotguns, and 66 live AA and BB cartridges and 410 BB cartridges,10 7.65 MM ammunition and 19 mobile phones were retrieved in the operation”, the police spokesperson said.
According to the police, these suspects are part of a syndicate operating and terrorising traders and residents in and around Afram Plains.
The suspects are being held for the possession of firearms without lawful authority and they will be arraigned after investigations, the police said.
