E/R: Two suspected ambulance driver ‘killers’ remanded

A magistrate court in the Eastern Region capital, Koforidua has remanded two suspects in connection with an attack on an ambulance which led to the death of its driver on February 4.

The suspects, Umaru Abubakar, 26 and 25-year-old Osmanu Bukari will spend two weeks in custody and will reappear before the court in two weeks.

This was after Sergeant George Defia, prosecutor in the case prayed the court to remand them and assist the police to investigate and arrest other accomplices involved in the crime.

Sergeant Defia told the court that at about 1:00 am on that fateful day the accused persons and six other accomplices now at large succeeded in robbing drivers and passengers onboard four vehicles, including an ambulance at gunpoint.

The deceased who was in charge of the Yilo Krobo Constituency Ambulance vehicle with registration number GV 644-20 was caught up in the robbery incident.

He was conveying a pregnant woman who was in preterm labour from the Akuse Government Hospital to the Eastern Regional Hospital due to lack of incubator.

The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the attack and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

He was later pronounced dead by medics at the Korle But Teaching Hospital.
