The Eastern Youth Development Association, a dedicated youth group from the Eastern Region, has officially declared its strong support for the creation of a new region from the existing Eastern Region. The group believes that this move, strongly advocated by local chiefs and traditional leaders, will significantly accelerate development in the area.
The Eastern Region’s vast land size of 19,323 square kilometers, which represents 8.1% of Ghana’s total land area, is one of the key factors supporting the call for a new region. The region also has a population of over 3 million people, making it the third most populous region in the country. Despite this, many parts of the region face challenges in accessing essential services, such as healthcare and education, due to the distance from the regional capital.
Additionally, while the Eastern Region contributes greatly to the national economy through its natural resources, agriculture, tourism, and human resources, there is still a noticeable gap in development. Many areas lack quality healthcare, clean drinking water, electricity, and economic opportunities, which the group believes can be addressed more effectively with the creation of a new region.
The Eastern Youth Development Association sees the creation of a new region as a crucial step toward improving infrastructure and reducing poverty in the area. By doing so, they aim to bridge the development gap between the various districts and the regional capital, ultimately bringing more opportunities and better living conditions to the people.
The group is calling on all political parties and their candidates to support this initiative. They have proposed a name for the new region and identified 16 districts that could be included. The association is urging all citizens and stakeholders to unite and work together to make this dream a reality, as it will benefit everyone in the long run.
