The Electoral Commission (EC) has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a credible and reliable voters’ register ahead of this year’s elections. Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the EC, made this assurance during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting with political parties on Tuesday, October 1.
“It is in our interest to produce a credible and robust final voter’s register…We urge you all and the citizens of Ghana to trust us. We will not fail you; we will not disappoint you, and we commit and pledge to conducting and undertaking a free, fair, transparent, and credible election come 2024,” she emphasized.
Mensa also revealed that the Commission has addressed all errors identified in the initial voters’ register. She noted that the current version of the register is more accurate than the one used during the voters’ exhibition in August.
“As a commission, we have devoted the last few weeks to correct the discrepancies, and you will find that the provisional voters’ register today is different and more accurate than what was exhibited and provided to the parties in August 2024,” she explained. “The discrepancies detected to date have largely been corrected, and the register that was presented to parties in early August is very different from what we have today.”
Addressing concerns that the EC may be trying to disenfranchise voters, she dismissed such claims as false.
To further ensure transparency, the EC will soon announce a second online exhibition, allowing voters to verify their details at no cost and report any issues they find. Political parties will also receive updated copies of the provisional voters’ register and will be given a specific timeframe to report any discrepancies to the Commission.
“We urge the parties to see this as a national assignment and not a partisan one. Let us put our hands to the plow and collectively clean the provisional voters’ register to ensure it is robust ahead of the 2024 elections,” Jean Mensa concluded.
