The Electoral Commission of Ghana has begun a two-day pilot exercise as it sets to compile a new voters’ register later this month.
The exercise which started on Tuesday, June 2, saw voters throng the various offices of the Commission across the 16 regional capitals to partake in the exercise.
Images shared on the EC’s Facebook page saw police officers at post to maintain law and order while the officers at the Commission ensured strict Covid-19 etiquette.
At EC office in the Ashanti Region, a huge Veronica bucket and solar powered hand washing machine for registrants to wash their hands was mounted. Arrangements for seats had been spaced out to ensure there is social distancing.
The exercise, according to the EC, is meant to identify excesses associated with the new system –including its effects on weather conditions and find ways of mitigating them.
“All issues identified will be forwarded to the Commission at the national level for the necessary rectifications to be made before the commencement of the exercise at the end of this month,” the EC said.
Some political party representatives were also at the centers to observe the exercise.
“Our observation shows that most of the applicants are staff of the Electoral Commission. They are well abreast with issues and they’re well composed in a controlled atmosphere which may not be a representative of a typical registration center…Be that as it may we will make our observations fully known to the public after the exercise,” General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region, Kwame Zu said in an interview.
