Eight travelers were tragically killed after gunmen ambushed the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, a community close to Walewale, and opened fire on vehicles.
The attack occurred on Sunday when armed men set up roadblocks in both Gbimsi and Walewale Town, stopping vehicles to identify potential victims. Passengers caught in the blockade were questioned about their identities, and the violent incident ultimately led to the deaths of around eight people. Two vehicles were also set ablaze, further escalating concerns over the security situation in the region.
One survivor described the terrifying experience: “I was travelling from Sunyani to Paga. Upon reaching Walewale, people had mounted roadblocks and were searching for individuals to kill. The incident lasted for more than an hour, yet security did not respond.”
The attack is suspected to be linked to the resurgence of the Bawku Conflict, which had seen a period of calm before this escalation.
In response, the Ghana Police Service has assured travelers that they are increasing security presence along the highway to protect lives and prevent further incidents.
In an official statement, the Ghana Police Service stated that efforts are underway to control the security situation in Bawku, its surrounding areas, and along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway.
In addition to the police and military presence in Bawku and nearby areas, the police emphasized that “there is also a joint Police and Military deployment along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway to ensure security and manage vehicular traffic.”
The security agencies reiterated, “The security agencies would like to once again assure the public that we are committed to maintaining peace, security, law and order in Bawku and its environs.”
