An elderly woman has tragically been shot dead by two young men in Northern Ghana, local media have reported.
The incident happened in the West Mamprusi District town of Janga (about 700 km from the national capital Accra).
Local website asaaseradio.com reports that the incident stems from allegations that the deceased, Musah Azaratu Poanaa, 60, was attempting to bewitch a community resident.
Eyewitnesses recount that the men believed to be the sons of the individual whom the deceased was allegedly targeting, were responsible for the killing.
The victim’s daughter, Musah Asana is quoted by asaaseradio.com as saying: “They were two. So, one gave a warning shot and brought my mother out [from the room] and shot her”.
“They said my mother was a witch. Today [24 September] they killed my mother, but it was yesterday [23 September] that they came to the house and said, my mother was going to kill their father, so because of that, they will also kill my mother,” she added.
The young lady is urging the police to apprehend the two young men, identified as Abila and Fatau, who fled their home after the incident.
As of now, the police have not provided any comments on the matter.
Ghana’s parliament has passed the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill 2022 which among other things seeks to prevent attacks on alleged witches.
The private member’s bill sponsored by the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu and four other MPs is to prohibit any persons from operating as a witch doctor or a witchfinder.
The law also proscribes the declaration, accusation, naming or labelling of another person as a witch.
