The women’s wing of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the USA has said former president John Mahama has shot himself in the foot in his selection of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate ahead of the 2020 elections.
In a statement, the Women’s Organizer – NPP-USA, Mrs Barbara Boafo, said: “However, the selection of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate to Mr. John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) comes to us with lots of fear and consternation.
“Our fear is premised on the fact that under the reign of Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang as the Minister for Education under the erstwhile administration of the NDC, teacher and trainee nurses in the country went through several ordeals following the cancellation of trainee allowances which was a major source of reprieve for trainees.”
She is therefore calling on trainees and all teachers to come out in their numbers come December 7, 2020 to vote against the NDC.
“We believe that the Nana Addo – Dr. Bawumia led government has achieved tremendous feet that cannot be allowed to wash down the drain and must be guided jealously. As such, we are calling on all colleague trainees and other Ghanaians aspiring to pursue teaching and nursing as professions, and most especially parents to mass up at the various registration centres to register so as to vote massively against the NDC in the December 7 elections.”
Below is her full statement:
STATEMENT BY THE NPP-USA WOMEN’S WING ON THE NOMINATION OF PROF JANE NAANA OPOKU AGYEMANG AS RUNNING MATE FOR MR JOHN MAHAMA
We wish to congratulate Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, former Minister of Education on her nomination as the Running Mate for Mr John Dramani Mahama ahead of the December 7, general elections. As a Women’s Wing, we can only welcome the symbolism as contributing to women empowerment.
However, the selection of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang as the running mate to Mr. John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) comes to us with lots of fear and consternation.
Our fear is premised on the fact that under the reign of Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang as the Minister for Education under the erstwhile administration of the NDC, teacher and trainee nurses in the country went through several ordeals following the cancellation of trainee allowances which was a major source of reprieve for trainees.
It took the intervention of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his able Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia to restore these much needed allowances for the trainee students and so if a competitor was raised to challenge such geniuses, then it would not be in the person of Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang
Suffice it to say that with her selection as the running mate to Mr. Mahama, we have no doubt that she would pursue her agenda once again, in the unlikely event that the NDC wins the December 7, general elections and sends this country back again.
If Mr Mahama’s crave for a Running Mate was for a female, it would have been some women who have demonstrable competence and have risen through the ranks to establish themselves firmly in the feminist sphere and one such a person could not have been Prof. Opoku-Agyemang.
We are certain that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang being a good woman has a good character but may lack the required qualities to improve the chances for Mr Mahama in the 2020 election, hence we doubt the value she brings to the ticket of the NDC party.
Devoid of her personality as a woman, but on the grounds of quality in governance; is she good enough to satisfy the ticket to ensure quality improvement in the governance? Is she capable of being described as the president in the absence of the President? In terms of the economy, how is she going to impact the economy, which is why we think she is a no match for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who has made a niche in such ventures.
We believe that the Nana Addo – Dr. Bawumia led government has achieved tremendous feat that cannot be allowed to wash down the drain and must be guided jealously. As such, we are calling on all colleague trainees and other Ghanaians aspiring to pursue teaching and nursing as professions, and most especially parents to mass up at the various registration centres to register so as to vote massively against the NDC in the December 7 elections.
Signed
Barbara Boafo (Mrs), Women’s Organizer – NPP-USA
