The Electoral Commission (EC) is gearing up to add between 50,000 and 70,000 new voters to the electoral roll during its upcoming mop-up voter registration exercise, scheduled from Thursday, August 1 to Saturday, August 3, 2024.

This three-day initiative aims to register individuals who have turned 18 since the previous limited voter registration period or those who were unable to register earlier. The registration will be conducted online, with the EC utilizing 268 District Offices, 26 Public Universities, and 41 Prison Centres nationwide. Registration will be available daily from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Mr. Samuel Tettey, the EC’s Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, announced that the Commission had collaborated with Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN) to ensure reliable internet connectivity throughout the registration period.

Previously, between May 7 and 29, 2024, the EC conducted a Limited Voter Registration Exercise that added 778,447 new voters to the electoral roll in preparation for the December 7 elections. This total included 408,332 females (52.45%) and 370,115 males (47.55%). Currently, there are 18,681,366 provisional registered voters.

Mr. Tettey emphasized that the mop-up registration is part of the EC’s efforts to create a comprehensive Voters Register for the 2024 General Election. For registration, applicants must present either a Ghana Card or a Ghana Passport. If these documents are unavailable, they must provide two registered voters as guarantors. Under Regulation 2 of CI 91, as amended by CI 126, each registered voter can only guarantee for up to 10 people. Those who guaranteed for 10 during the previous registration cannot act as guarantors in this mop-up exercise.

Guarantors must ensure that the individuals they support are Ghanaian, at least 18 years old, and meet other registration requirements, including residency in the electoral area where they wish to register. Political parties are allowed to send agents to observe the process, and Mr. Tettey urged them to ensure their representatives act professionally to avoid incidents.

The EC has coordinated with the Ghana Police Service to provide security at the registration centers, ensuring a peaceful environment. Mr. Tettey also requested that parents and guardians ensure that only individuals aged 18 and older participate in the registration.

Additionally, the EC will hold a Voters Register exhibition from August 20 to 27, 2024, at all polling stations nationwide. Registered voters are encouraged to visit their polling stations or use the provided shortcode to verify their details in the Voters Register.
