Divine Otoo Agorhom, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has emphasized Ghana’s steady economic recovery under the current government despite the difficulties of recent years.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle, Agorhom acknowledged that the economic challenges of the past year hit the Greater Accra Region particularly hard due to its high population density. However, he noted that the economy has stabilized and is on a path to recovery, supported by available data.

“Considering the challenges that we have been through for the past one year economically, the bite of the economic situation is more here [Greater Accra Region] than any other place. And so you expect voters here to be ordinarily angry with the system,” he said.

Agorhom also reflected on the NPP’s reduced performance in Greater Accra during the 2020 elections, attributing it to heightened anti-government sentiments among residents. However, he expressed optimism about the government’s efforts to turn things around.

He cited President Akufo-Addo’s leadership during the crisis, highlighting a critical decision made to prioritize citizens’ well-being over immediate economic stability. “Just as H.E the President [Akufo-Addo] said earlier, he told us clearly that we were then confronted with a situation where we had to choose between working to save the economy or working to save the citizenry.

“He took a decision to go for the latter. He warned us that the decision he was taking at the time could have such consequences that would affect the economy…And so we got into that difficulty as he rightly predicted. But by the grace of God, as we speak now, you agree with me that he has been able to steer the economy to stability.”

Agorhom also raised questions about whether Greater Accra’s parliamentary dynamics would significantly influence the upcoming presidential elections, given the region’s history as a key battleground in national politics.
