Ghana’s opposition leader and former president, John Mahama, has announced the retention of former education minister Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the upcoming 2024 elections.
Opoku-Agyemang’s reappointment underscores Mahama’s commitment to gender inclusion and representation in Ghana’s political landscape, a statement from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) said.
Opoku-Agyemang, a distinguished academic and advocate for women’s empowerment, previously made history as the first female vice-presidential candidate for a major political party in Ghana during the 2020 elections.
Her selection as Mahama’s running mate for the second consecutive election cycle reaffirms the opposition’s dedication to promoting gender equality and inclusive governance.
In a statement, Mahama emphasized the importance of Opoku-Agyemang’s continued presence on the ticket, citing her exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to national development.
“I am proud to have Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as my running mate. Her integrity, dedication, and vision for a better Ghana make her the ideal candidate to join me in leading our party to victory in the upcoming elections,” Mahama said.
He praised her contributions to education reform and social welfare initiatives during her tenure as education minister, highlighting her dedication to advancing the rights and opportunities of all Ghanaians, particularly women and marginalised communities.
Mahama’s decision to retain Opoku-Agyemang comes as the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares to announce its flag bearer for the 2024 elections. With Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia yet to select a running mate, attention is focused on the forthcoming electoral contest, which is expected to be closely contested.
