Some supporters of Ghana’s ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) would prefer to see fomer Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia lead the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 elections—not out of admiration, but because they see him as easier to beat.

This is according to Musah Danquah, Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, who spoke to Metro TV about the findings of his organisation’s latest political polling.

According to the data, 48% of NPP supporters back Dr. Bawumia to continue as the party’s flagbearer, while a surprising 20% of NDC voters also favour his candidacy.

“Some NDC supporters are backing Dr. Bawumia not because they share his political ideology, but because they believe he presents a weaker challenge to their party’s chances in 2028,” Danquah said.

He suggested this could be a form of tactical positioning by opposition voters to influence the NPP’s candidate selection process.

“We must be very careful,” he warned.

“There are NDC sympathizers who might strategically support Bawumia in polling or open primaries to ensure the NPP elects a candidate they perceive as beatable. But we need to interrogate the data further.”

The pollster added that Dr. Bawumia faces challenges regarding public perception, especially on issues of consistency and credibility. Questions have also emerged about how he is viewed among youth and religious communities.

Within the NPP, Bawumia still commands strong support, with many party insiders seeing him as a unifying figure. However, some observers point to his record in government and ideological shifts as potential liabilities heading into a future presidential contest.

“The dynamics are complex,” Danquah stated.

“The electorate is watching closely, and both parties must tread carefully as they approach their final candidate selections.”

The full Global Info Analytics report is expected later this month.
