A man sustained gunshot injuries on the night of Wednesday, February 19, 2025, after customs officers fired at a vehicle attempting to evade arrest. The incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. in Sogakope, leaving an innocent bystander injured.

The vehicle in question, a Mercedes-Benz with registration number GC 3361-14, was being pursued by customs officials. In their attempt to stop the vehicle, officers opened fire, hitting its rear windshield.

Tragically, during the gunfire, Alex, an engineer working at the South Tongu District Assembly, was struck by two stray bullets. He had been standing by the roadside, waiting to board a vehicle to Accra, when he was hit. He was immediately rushed to Comboni Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. However, eyewitnesses who spoke to Citi News recounted the terrifying moment.

> “A pickup was chasing a car and stopped in front of us, and a few seconds later, we heard gunshots. Before we could realize, a man who was by the roadside waiting to board a vehicle to Accra was hit by the bullets.”

One of the witnesses further confirmed that the shooters were customs officers, who later apprehended the uncustomed vehicle they had been chasing.

> “We identified those who shot as the customs officials. They have, however, arrested the uncustomed vehicle they were chasing. But the victim has been rushed to the hospital.”

As investigations continue, concerns are being raised about the use of firearms by security agencies in public areas, especially in operations that put innocent lives at risk.
