The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has launched a nationwide crackdown to tackle the rising misuse of opioids in Ghana.
This initiative is being carried out in partnership with the Narcotics Control Commission, the GRA Customs Division, the Pharmacy Council, and the Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service.
Following a recent intelligence-driven operation in Tema and Ashaiman, Dr. Olivia Agyekumaa Boateng, Director of Tobacco and Substance Abuse at the FDA, addressed the media on Friday, April 11. She reaffirmed the FDA’s strong commitment to safeguarding public health and outlined plans to intensify efforts in addressing opioid abuse.
Dr. Boateng stressed the need for tighter collaboration with relevant stakeholders and increased public awareness campaigns. “We want the public to know that we are taking action. This crisis is affecting our youth, and we are implementing several strategies beyond just education to combat it,” she said.
She also highlighted the urgency of removing illegal drugs already circulating in the market, stating that these substances are a major driver of addiction. “It’s crucial to clear the market of these harmful drugs. We are also working on enforcing stricter controls and partnering with mental health services to offer support to those who are already addicted,” she added.
