Alfred Thompson, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Communications Team, has urged Ghanaians to approach the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, without involving partisan politics. He emphasized that a united front is essential for tackling the issue and restoring the country’s environment.
During an interview on *The Big Issue* with Selorm Adonoo on Channel One TV and Citi FM on Saturday, September 14, Thompson highlighted that the impact of galamsey affects all Ghanaians, regardless of political affiliation. He stressed the importance of working together to repair the damage done to lands and water bodies.
“I was expecting that after the first phase of the 2020 elections, we would all come together and fight galamsey, not as political parties but as individuals who care about the future of Ghana because everyone is affected,” Thompson said. “In some areas, like the Central Region, water is a serious issue, and it affects everybody. So, we all need to unite and stop making this a political matter. When politics is involved, people will resist, trying to protect their interests.”
He also highlighted the government’s commitment to the fight against illegal mining. “The government is making significant efforts to combat galamsey, and the president has repeatedly stated that he is willing to put his presidency on the line for this cause. A committee has been set up to accelerate the process of dealing with this issue,” Thompson added.
