Fire has destroyed part of a building at the 37 Army Officers Mess in Ghana’s capital Accra, local media reported.

The fire which occurred on Saturday at about 9am swept through about four rooms, myjoyonline reported.

Occupants of four rooms at the first floor of the C block had to evacuate for safety as the fire violently swept through the building.

It is not yet known what caused the fire but personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service said the huge blaze has been battled.

A visit to the scene on Sunday morning by reporters showed charred electronic equipment, glassware, wooden furniture and burnt clothing.

It is expected that top security chiefs from the army are expected to visit the scene.

The development comes days after policewoman

Inspector Kate Hawa Kwakuru, 45, and her three children died in a gas explosion at Ablekuma Fan Milk in Accra on January 4, 2020.

The children were identified as Emmanuel Adjei, a 22-year-old student of Ghana Telecom University College; Ebenezer Yansom Kwakuru, 9, and her 11-year-old daughter, Joy Yansom Kwakuru.

Some senior police officers from the Accra Regional Police Command visited the residence of the deceased over the weekend.

The delegation led by DCOP/Mr.  Frederick Adu Anim, the regional commander, and his deputy, DCOP Emmanuel Afriyie Sekyi, was given first-hand information during the commiseration visit.
