The First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo has opened an expanded Book Processing Unit and re-launched the mobile library service for online library users in the southern sector of the country.
This event was done at the official declaration of 2019 as the “Year of Reading” on Tuesday, 19th February, 2019, at the Forecourt of the Ghana Library Authority in Accra.
Held under the theme, “Reading for Progress”, the launch has become appropriate and timely, in a growing competitive world where life-long learning has become the only way to grow intellectually and build wealth of knowledge.
According to the First Lady, based on the activities outlined to be undertaken within the “Year of Reading” she is hopeful of a transformation of the landscape of reading promotion efforts and efforts to bring library services to Ghanaians.
“Last year, we launched the Read to Learn, Learn to Read project with two prone approaches of building libraries and undertaking reading sessions with children for TV. Soon, the first library will be ready and handed over to the Ghana Library Authority to be part of its network of libraries around the country to enable children of the community of Bia in Western region benefit from the enormous resources that will be available.” She hinted.
With Ghana having to contend with over 70 years of manual library services, the Head of the Rebecca Foundation was glad to notice that all the systematic issues being tackled by the Ghana Library Authority is geared towards setting a robust foundation for library service.
She commended the Authority on the fresh investments in the development of the Schools and College Library Unit at the Library Authority and pledge the support of the Rebecca Foundation to advance government’s vision of connecting Ghanaians to knowledge resources.
