Ghana’s Black Meteors left-back Edward Sarpong has apologised to Ghanaians after missing a crucial penalty at the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 22-year-old defender who plays in Portugal has been a talk of town after Ghana was eliminated from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics games on penalties by South Africa in Egypt last weekend.
Speaking to Adom FM in the country’s capital, Accra, the disappointed young defender pleaded for forgiveness from Ghanaians.
“I am very sorry for the penalty miss and I would like to use this opportunity to ask Ghanaians to forgive me for missing from the spot,” Sarpong pleaded.
Meanwhile, Sarpong revealed that his decision to take the penalty was as a result of all players refusing to take responsibility.
“No one wanted to take the penalty because everyone was afraid to miss it, and I elected myself to take the spot kick,” he said.
“It was my aim to score and take Ghana to the Olympics since our last appearance in Athens, 2004 and I beg Ghanaians to pardon me for the miss”, he stressed.
