The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is mourning the loss of former Majority Leader, Felix Owusu-Adjapong, who passed away at the age of 79. The details surrounding his passing remain undisclosed.
Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, confirmed the unfortunate news of the former Parliament leader’s demise on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, through his social media platform.
Annoh-Dompreh conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family, stating, “Deep condolences to the family… Former Majority leader, Hon. Felix Owusu passed on.”
Born on February 13, 1944, Felix Kwasi Owusu-Adjapong served as the Member of Parliament for Akyem Swedru in the Eastern Region. He also held the position of Minister for Energy during his political career.
Owusu-Adjapong’s legacy spans multiple parliamentary terms, as he served in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Parliaments of Ghana.
In the 1996 Ghanaian general elections, he was initially elected as the Member of Parliament for Akyem Swedru with a total of 15,824 votes, representing 45.30% of the total valid votes cast that year.
He secured his re-election in the 2000 Ghanaian general elections with a significant majority, garnering 14,614 votes, which accounted for 56.80% of the votes cast.
During his career, he took on various ministerial roles, including Minister for Transport and Communications in February 2001 and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs in April 2003.
In the 2004 general elections, Owusu-Adjapong was elected once more as the Member of Parliament, securing a majority vote of 21,048, which constituted 66.94% of the total votes polled that year.
In 2007, he resigned from his ministerial position to pursue an unsuccessful bid for the presidential nomination of the NPP.
