John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has committed to sustaining the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy if elected, ensuring it has a stable source of funding for long-term success.
Speaking with Christian leaders in Kumasi on Monday, November 11, Mahama addressed rumors that he would end the Free SHS program, dismissing them as a “political gimmick” intended to create fear among Ghanaians. “Free SHS has come to stay,” he emphasized, acknowledging the policy’s role in expanding educational access and stressing that “we must ensure it’s well-funded to improve its quality and keep it going.”
Mahama’s statements underscore the NDC’s support for Free SHS, with an emphasis on securing continuous funding to overcome current challenges. His stance aligns with both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which also back the policy, although they propose different strategies to enhance its effectiveness and quality.
Mahama further highlighted that a properly funded Free SHS program would lead to better educational outcomes for Ghanaian students. He reassured the public that, under his administration, Free SHS would not only continue but also be strengthened to serve future generations effectively.
